“I am a professional player on the Premier padel, currently ranked 240th during the 2022 season. I have been playing Padel for 14 years and have been a Padel coach near Madrid for 9 years. In my sports career as a Padel player, I reached the 13th position in Spain in the U18 category and participated in several Spanish national championships. Within the Premier padel, I have competed in events in Sweden, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. I have also taken part in international competitions in Ireland and the Netherlands.

Today, I continue to train as part of my career, but I also dedicate myself to giving Padel lessons and hosting camps in Alcala de Hénarès, a suburb of Madrid. I also have a role as a commentator/consultant on the Premier padel TV. Additionally, I have developed an Instagram account with both educational and humorous content related to Padel. Currently, I am also a coach for ToPadel.”

PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH TO PADEL ACCORDING TO PETER CONSUEGRA

I believe that padel is an easy sport to learn, and one can quickly find enjoyment in it. However, as one progresses, it becomes more challenging to understand and master the game at a higher level.

It is very important to first learn the technique to avoid injuries and also to progress more quickly. This is an essential foundation. You should always ask yourself if a shot is functional or not, meaning that if, for example, I hit the ball in a certain way that may not be technically correct but I achieve the desired result, then I think it’s not so important to modify that shot as long as it doesn’t cause pain or injury.

But after learning the technique, it is very important to understand the tactical concepts that can take you to a higher level. Padel is ultimately a very strategic sport where you play as a team with your partner. So, it is very important to establish a series of strategies before any match if you want to aim for more victories. There are basic concepts that every player must have internalized to understand the game. Once you have understood this series of concepts, you can make small adjustments. But the reality is that, starting from tactics, you can win many matches even against opponents who may appear superior physically or technically. This is a key factor for achieving success.

On the other hand, I believe that the game should be learned from defense to offense first because, especially at lower levels, the most important thing is to know how to defend and constantly keep the ball in play before moving on to offensive positions. You need to have a certain mastery of defensive shots before transitioning to the attack. It is not possible to have a very good defense and not know how to exercise patience and control.

Tactically, I think the most important, along with the technical aspect, is to aim to generate a high volume of play to move your opponents. I believe it is essential to learn how to manipulate your opponent to gain an advantageous position and make them hit balls that are more comfortable for you to attack.

As the game progresses, the most important thing is to know when to change the pace and learn when to attack, when to transition from defense to offense, when it’s better to take risks. In the end, there are a series of fundamental concepts that we must learn to improve in this sport.

In defense : Defense should be played without taking unnecessary risks. We need to offer a lot of volume and wait for the right moment to execute a lob, but lobs cannot be attempted on just any ball. You must play very well with the opponent, be solid, and wait for the right ball to execute a good lob. As we improve, we reach higher levels, and then we need to focus more on defense-to-offense transitions. You must know when to patiently play with solidity and change the pace to reach the net in different ways.

In attack :
We must think about playing very intelligently, moving the opponent and waiting for the right moment to change speed, rhythm, or direction suddenly. It’s important to know the perfect moment to take a risk. Of course, when we have a ball that is very comfortable for us, we must have the ability to finish. However, we cannot play everything at 100%, including at the net, because the opponent will adapt and take advantage.

THE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING WITH PETER CONSUEGRA IN PADEL :

I believe one of the advantages of working with me is that I pay attention to the smallest details. Additionally, as a Premier padel player, I consider myself to have extensive competitive experience, and I can identify the patterns and tactics that work best, even to apply them at a lower level. Furthermore, I am a sports psychologist, and I believe this complements my coaching quality when it comes to approaching the student player and identifying their needs for improving their game.

On the other hand, I have a role as a commentator for the Premier padel. Therefore, I am accustomed to focusing on the latest trends and tactics on the circuit that work the best. I am fluent in English and can guide you through lessons entirely conducted in the English language.

COACH PETER CONSUEGRA’S TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR PADEL GAME :

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is that you will win more points with lobs than with smashes, meaning that good defense can be a better tactic than a strong attack.
